Public Notes:

Guillaume Mesnard au bon Pasteur died c. 1680. Made small lenses for Huygens brothers. This dates from c. 1675. Next one has same inside tube diameter. Made many at same time. Inner tubes would be same and outer ones differ slightly. Leather is Turkish fish skin imitation. Leather from donkey. Fairly thin leather-- black colored. Process: heat dented copper plate and put weather leather on it then press with book press. Brought to Europe c. 2nd half of 1600s. Tooling occurs in two parts, inner part and floating part. Louis Menard was son of Guillaume. Also provided lenses to Huygenses but not as good. Style same but tooling different. Leather is red French style rather than Turkish. Eyepiece is missing field lens. Screwed together with ebony.
