Scarlett died in 1742; this is one of his latest telescopes. This is the only Scarlett that survives with optics. A two string system is used for each altazimuth, one dial per direction. Mahogany veneer is used prior to 1740 due to excise tax, however, this telescope is solid mahogany; placing it between 1740 and 1742. The sight tube has copper cross hairs with opening for oil lamp, possibly to illuminate. The mirror cell is not easily adjustable. Reflectors go out of style when Dollond makes achromatics, but before this Scarlett's reflectors are brighter and clearer, mirrors with less contrast, puts others out of business. This changes when Mudge figures out how to eliminate tin oxide and striations.
