"English telescope (reverse tapered). The main tube is covered with white parchment with rich gold tooling, resembling Turner (1966), nos. 20b & 71/72. Seven drawtubes. The original storage tube has been preserved with the instrument. Signed on this barrel: ‘JOHN: MARSHALL * LVDGAT: STREET * LONDON’. Length 1.83 cm, Ø 7 cm. Ca. 1700.

John Marshall had an optical workshop in Ludgate Street, London between 1685 and 1723. He was an apprentice of Jack Dunning (also called John Dunnett), who was a subcontractor of telescope tubes in the second quarter of the seventeenth century . It is suggested therefore that Marshall made his own telescope and microscope tubes" (Louwman, and Zuidervaart, 2013).
