Public Notes:

This highly symbolic engraving (one can notice the absence of a mast for the pulley) was possibly printed for the first time in Gottigniez's book "Logistica Universalis", Naples 1687. IHS is a Christologic symbol ("In Hoc Signo vinces", or "Iesus Hominum Salvator") much used by the jesuits. Gottignies was indeed a Jesuit. The engraving was reprinted by F.Bianchini in his "Hesperi et Phosphori Nova Phaenomena", Rome 1728, which is much better known and possibly the source for the slide.
