Public Notes:

"English telescope. Main tube and ferrules covered with red ‘Bordeaux’ leather, with (worn out) gold tooling, resembling Turner (1966), nos. 20b, 28 and 71. At some point in the past the tube has been lacquered. Five drawtubes, painted green. The objective lens is missing. Length 45-170 cm, Ø 6 cm. Signed: ‘JO: HOWE / LONDINI / FECIT’. First quarter of the eighteenth century .

Joseph Howe worked as an instrument maker in London between 1667 and 1710. He was succeeded by his son John Howe, who worked from 1703 until 1733. According Turner (1966) the signature ‘JO’ instead of ‘JOS’ relates to the son. A third and fourth generation with the same name, also worked as optical instrument makers. However they could not have made this telescope, for the style of this telescope dates the instrument to the first quarter of the eighteenth century" (Louwman, and Zuidervaart, 2013).
