Main tube covered in black leather with gold tooling. Seven pasteboard drawtubes. End pieces and protective caps made of a tropical wood. The protective caps have a very smooth screw-thread. Second half of the seventeenth century (Louwman and Zuidervaart, 2013).

Although this unsigned, impressive telescope has only a rather recent French provenance, analysis of the gold tooled rings confirm it indeed has a French origin. Furthermore some of the motifs in these gold tooled rings (seen in the illustrations) are identical to decorations found on the bindings of French books from the same period (Louwman and Zuidervaart, 2013).

Eyepiece tube about 2 feet long, each tube about 3 feet long. Objective is a replacement. Purple paper on tubes.
