Public Notes:

"Main tube and pasteboard ferrules covered with green coloured paper. Five pasteboard drawtubes, covered with red brocade paper with printed floral motifs. On the paper fragments can be read of the following text: ‘[ZU HABEN] BEY [MIR] GEORG CHRI[STOPH STOY IN] AUGS[PURG]’. Length 89 cm, Ø 4 cm, diaphragm Ø 1.3 cm. Compound eyepiece with three lenses. Unsigned. Presumably made in the early eighteenth century.

Georg Christoph Stoy (1670-ca. 1740) was one of the most prominent producers of the so called ‘brocade paper’ in Augsburg. He started his business in 1709. Paper from the Stoy-workshop was used to decorate this telescope. So in this case the signature does NOT refer to a maker or owner of the instrument" (Louwman and Zuidervaart, 2013).
