Public Notes:

"Main tube covered with orange coloured paper with gold tooling. Two drawtubes, made of pasteboard, covered with spirally shaped orange and green coloured paper. Ferrules and end pieces made of horn. Signed: ‘Leonardo Semitecolo’. Length 31-63 cm, Ø 4 cm.

Leonardo Semitecolo worked in Venice, at the Fondamenta dell’ Osmarin. This was the same canal where Biagio Burlini had his workshop too. Dated instruments have revealed that Semitecolo was active as early as 1756. The Semitecolo-workshop was very productive in making cheap telescopes in series for more than a century . The products of the Semitecolo workshop are very recognisable, having all orange coloured pasteboard tubes with fittings made of horn. All these Venetian telescopes have a simple single lens objective, avoiding the far more expensive achromatic doublet- or triplet objective glass. The last telescope maker from the Semitecolo family died in 1869" (Louwman and Zuidervaart, 2013).
