Cedar wood construction. Finished by "maki-e" technique of applying gold powder to layer of lacquer by a reed. Traditional plant motif also seen in Japanese textiles. Case 51 x 9 x 10 cm.

"Japanese telescope. Black lacquered main tube made of cedar wood, with three black lacquered drawtubes. Rich gold tooling. With protective caps and wooden casing. Length 47/124 cm, Ø 8 cm. Unsigned. First half of the nineteenth century" (Louwman and Zuidervaart, 2013).
