"Spyglass combined with a sewing kit, signed on the protective slide: ‘Ribright / Optician / Fecit / London’ and ‘By ye kings Royal patent’. Cylindrical tube made of blue agate, with elaborately decorated gold fittings. Length 11 cm, Ø 3 cm.

In 1749 the instrument maker Thomas Ribright received a patent for this compendium with a ‘perspective glass’ and several accessories. This ‘sewing kit’ (a lady’s necessaire!) contains a pair of scissors, a knife with a golden handle, an ear spoon, a golden pair of tweezers, an ivory aide-de-memoire and a golden pencil holder.

Provenance: auctioned in 1954 by the Egyptian government from the possessions of former King Farouk of Egypt" (Louwman and Zuidervaart, 2013).
